At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC 2015), Cyanogen Inc, the creators of the CyanogenMod OS announced a partnership with Qualcomm which will see Cyanogen bring its OS to some Snapdragon processors.

According to an official statement from the company, the collaboration will see Cyanogen provide support for the best features and UI enhancements of the Cyanogen Operating System on future Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

The supporter processors on the list are the upcoming comes planned for April and include future Qualcomm Reference Design (QRD) running Snapdragon 200, 400, and 600 series processors.

Cyanogen plans to bring a number of feature-rich enhancements, including a new launcher and personal information management apps across dialer, messaging, contacts, and calendar with this collaboration. The company also announced that the most current Android 5.0 Lollipop release experience of CyanogenMod will be available to device makers globally.

Kirt McMaster, CEO, Cyanogen Inc, said in a press release, “We’re addressing the needs of device makers in developed and developing markets looking for a truly differentiated software experience that matter to consumers.”

“We chose to work with Cyanogen based on their deep Android expertise and innovative approach to enhancing smartphone software,” said Jason Bremner, SVP of Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies . “By collaborating with Cyanogen, we are able to offer unique experiences to users of Snapdragon based devices.”

The Cyanogen OS has grown significantly from a project on Github and is now compatible with over 200 devices. The company has partnered with Oppo, OnePlus and Micromax’s Yu Televentures, etc to launch smartphones with the CyanogenMod OS version of Android. India now has the OnePlus and Micromax Yu devices which run CynaogenMod, although the company’s relationship with Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus has soured over the Indian smartphone market.

Recently CyanogenMod’s CEO Kirt McMaster had blasted Google over its control of Android and hinted that the company wants to move away from a Google-centric version of Android by launching its own app store.

“We’re making a version of Android that is more open so we can integrate with more partners so their servicers can be tier one services, so startups working on [artificial intelligence] or other problems don’t get stuck having you have to launch a stupid little application that inevitably gets acquired by Google or Apple. These companies can thrive on non-Google Android,” he had told The Information (paywall article).
