Qualcomm has finally announced the 64-bit successor to its Krait CPU. The new CPU named Kyro, will first be seen on the Snapdragon 820 SoC (which was announced at the MWC), will be seen in the second half of 2015. This means that consumer devices sporting the 820 SoC will come out only towards the end of 2015 or the start of 2016.

Qualcomm has stated that it will be using ‘a leading edge FinFET process’ to make the Snapdragon 820 SoC. This can either refer to TSMC’s 16nm process or Samsung / Global Foundries’ 14nm process.

Being a 64-bit ARM chipset, Kyro will be compatible with the ARM v8 instruction set. There will most likely be a new micro architecture to handle a wide-range of tasks.

Qualcomm will also release its cognitive computing platform, called Zeroth, with the Snapdragon 820. This platform is meant to anticipate users’ needs and actions in advance, without requiring access to the cloud. This will make the devices sporting the Snapdragon 820 SoC much more richer in context
