Samsung and HTC have both unveiled their new flagships and they're both packed full of cutting-edge tech, but while the HTC One M9 predictably uses a Snapdragon 810 chip, the Samsung Galaxy S6 takes a chance on Samsung's own Exynos 7420.

While both are slick in use, they've also both been benchmarked and compared with existing handsets like the iPhone 6 Plus and based on the results the Galaxy S6 seems like a real beast.

The GeekBench results were shared by ComputerBase.de and show that the Galaxy S6 tops the multi-core table with a score of 4,547, where higher is better.

The HTC One M9 is in second place, but it's a distant second, with 3,959. That's followed by the Snapdragon 805-packing Nexus 6 with 3,307, then the Nvidia Shield tablet with 2,928 and in sixth the iPhone 6 Plus with 2,911.

6 Plus is more than enough

Of course the iPhone 6 Plus is only a dual-core device and the Samsung Galaxy S6 is octa-core, so maybe that's not surprising. Indeed the 6 Plus fares far better in single core tests. It doesn't quite top the table, the Nexus 9 with its Nvidia Tegra K1 Denver chip achieves that with a score of 1,976.

But the iPhone 6 Plus is second with 1,626, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S6 with 1,443, once again beating the HTC One M9, which achieves a score of 1,186.

As the Nexus 9 is a tablet the Galaxy S6 seems to be far and away the highest scoring Android smartphone and miles ahead of any other mobile device in multi-core scores.

Of course while this is an indication of power it's not a reliable way to fully judge a phones performance, but on paper it seems that Samsung may have made the right decision in using its own chip, while the iPhone 6 Plus is in no immediate danger of being dwarfed in power.
