As promised, TD Canada Trust has updated its Android app (and soon, iOS) with an overhaul that feels more native, more speedy, and certainly more enjoyable to use.

Previously an HTML5 WebView boxed as a native app, TD’s mobile experience on both iOS and Android was lacklustre compared to the other large banks like RBC Canada, Scotiabank, CIBC and BMO. The new Android version adds a side hamburger menu for quick access to accounts, transfers, bill payments and mobile deposits or payments, as well as investing services and cross-border banking support with TD Bank in the U.S.

The major changes are in the way users navigate the app. There are numerous ways to get to account balances, including a new Quick Access menu that is available by swiping in from the right side of the screen. This allows users to check balances from any screen within the app.

New to the app is a previously web-only feature that allows users to add recipients to Interac or Visa e-transfers, or add bill payees within Canada, or make payments to existing U.S. payees.

Of course, mobile payments are still accessible within the app, but only for devices that support it, such as the Sony Xperia Z3 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

This app update is a long time coming from Canada’s second-largest bank, and while it doesn’t feature the same polish as some of its counterparts, it’s a big step for the institution.

We’ll update this post when the iOS version goes live, too.
