Leaked image suggests the Sony Xperia Z5 wants your fingerprints

Sony might finally be adding fingerprint scanners to its smartphones, at least, if a leaked image is to be believed.

The photo, which was shared on Twitter by ViziLeaks, shows an iPhone sandwiched between two Xperia handsets, one large and one small, so likely the Sony Xperia Z5 and Sony Xperia Z5 Compact.

The focus of the photo though is what appears to be a fingerprint scanner baked into the power button on the side of the phone. Both handsets seem to have a fingerprint scanner setup menu on the screen and the more distant smaller handset shows an image suggesting the scanner is on the side of the device.

Xperia Z5 fingerprint scanner

The addition of a fingerprint scanner has led to an elongated power button, which in turn has forced the volume controls further down the side of the phone, but otherwise the design looks similar to what we've seen on other recent Xperia handsets.

Don't count on it

There are a few things to consider though. Firstly this could of course be a fake, especially as the phones are arranged in such a way that you can't see the scanner on the smaller handset or get a good look at the text on the screen.

Secondly there's a chance that it's real but isn't the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact. The leaker labels them as 'Sony Xperia Z(TBC) and compact' so it's likely these are Sony's next flagships, but they don't look super premium, though they could be early prototypes.

In response to comments on the image ViziLeaks also reveals that the phones apparently have glass backs and don't support USB Type-C.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to the Sony Xperia Z5, but hopefully it will be a bigger upgrade than the Sony Xperia Z3+ was.
