Sony Xperia Z5 could be the world's first 4K smartphone

Sony appears to be gearing up to launch a brand new smartphone at IFA 2015 (most likely the Xperia Z5), and specifications of the new handset have apparently leaked, which if true could result in a very interesting device.

According to the Sony Georgia Facebook page – which we should point out is not an official Sony account – there will be in fact three handsets announced by the Japanese company.

These will apparently be the Xperia Z5 Compact, which will come with a 4.6-inch 720p screen, an Xperia Z5 with a 5-inch 1080p screen and the Xperia Z5 Premium which will come with a 5.5-inch screen and a 4K resolution.

That's a lot of pixels

If the rumours are true then the Xperia Z5 Premium would be the world's first handset with a ultra-high definition screen, as long as the rumoured ZTE Star 3 doesn't make an appearance beforehand.

With a frankly immense 3840 x 2160 resolution crammed into a 5.5-inch screen, the Z5 Premium could have a pixel density of 808ppi. In comparison, the LG G4's 1440 x 2560 resolution 5.5-inch screen has a pixel per inch density of 538.

Having a 4K display on a relatively small screen is certainly an interesting move by Sony, though we're still not convinced resolutions need to go that high for smartphones. It would be a crucial differentiator for the Xperia Z5 though – something Sony's flagging mobile division could do with to rejuvenate sales.

According to the leak all Xperia Z5 variants will have fingerprint sensors, which could make sense with Google's upcoming Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system natively supporting the technology.

The rumours also suggest that the devices will get an upgraded camera with a faster autofocus system and a 23 megapixel sensor – which ties in with what Sony's official Xperia Twitter account was hinting at the other day.

We've reached out to Sony to see how reliable these leaks are, but until we've heard anything official, we'd hold off getting too excited just yet. Luckily Sony's IFA event on September 2 is just around the corner, which is when we should find out more.
