Sony’s smartphone sales have been lagging, but there is hope the company’s upcoming Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact can breathe new life into its smartphone flagship series. The handsets are expected to be unveiled at the IFA trade show in Berlin next month, but the image you see above purports to be an early glimpse of the Xperia Z5 Compact.

The photo certainly looks the real deal and could be an official render for a press shot Sony will use. However, while this claims to be the Xperia Z5 Compact, we think it looks large enough to be the Xperia Z5 flagship itself. Either way, this appears to be a previously unseen Sony smartphone.

Previous leaks have revealed that the Xperia Z5 handsets will sport fingerprint scanners, a first for Sony in that regard. The volume and power buttons have been moved lower as the scanner will be unusually side mounted.
