Did Sony just throw in the towel? I ask because they announced their new flagship, the Xperia Z4, this morning at a press event in Japan. While there is nothing wrong with announcing a product in Japan, they didn’t bother to tell anyone outside of Japan and also don’t have anything to announce yet in terms of availability outside of Japan. That’s odd, right? This is supposed to be their next hit. Or is it? Or is this a, “Hey, we have a new phone, but are about to pull the plug on our smartphone business and don’t want to spend much promoting it,” type of thing? Whatever the reason for the quiet unveiling, let’s talk about the new Xperia.

In terms of specs, the Sony Xperia Z4 is hardly different than the Xperia Z3. You are looking at a 5.2-inch 1080p LCD display, 2.0GHz Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB storage, micro SD card slot, 20.7MP rear camera, 5.1MP front camera, 2930mAh battery, IPX8 waterproofing, Android 5.0, and a body that is 6.9mm thick. The differences here are the Snapdragon 810, slightly slimmer body and battery, and new 5.1MP front camera. That’s pretty much it. As you can see from the pictures, it even looks like a Z3.

The phone comes in white, black, copper, and aqua green, and has a metal frame. It also managed to ditch a USB cover yet remain waterproof. Improvement!

The Xperia Z4 arrives this summer, in Japan. Again, Sony doesn’t want to talk about this phone at all outside of Japan, so we have no idea if it’s going to make it anywhere else. It seems like it should – at least to Europe. Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. Maybe this is the end or maybe this is just Sony stalling before it shifts into a new mobile focus outside of Xperia. Whatever they are doing, this feels more half-assed than what HTC did with the One M9. Ugh.

A big Android Wear update was announced this morning by Google. The update will slowly rollout to devices over the coming weeks, but it includes all sorts of new features and tweaks, like WiFi support and the ability to draw emoji in response to messages.

According to Google, the update first introduces an always-on mode for apps, because some times you just need the watch face to stay on until you tell it to turn off. Think of needing directions or if you are checking a list, but don’t feel like flicking your wrist or tapping the screen each time you need your Android Wear device to turn back on. If you are worried about battery drains, Google has tried to alleviate that problem by allowing apps to go black-white when you aren’t looking at your watch, but back to full color as you do point it back at your face.

Here are a couple of examples:

WiFi support is included! What does this mean for you, the Android Wear user? It means you can disconnect your watch from your phone, but still receive notifications, as long as you are on WiFi and your phone has a data connection. Your watch then because somewhat independent in a way.

Google added a wrist-flick gesture for when your hands are full and you still want to scroll through your timeline. A quick wrist twist and back will slide your current card up and the next one into view.

The UI of Android Wear is also changing a bit, meaning as you tap on the screen, you will get three columns to give you quicker access to the items you need. The start screen now gives you a list of apps you may be needing access to, the middle screen is your contacts, and the far right screen is your standard “Speak Now” and settings screen.

And finally, Google is adding a “Draw emoji” option when you want to respond to a message without speaking it.

Again, the update is rolling out over the “next few weeks.” Google did mention that it will first launch with the LG Watch Urbane, which is barely available.

The April 20 event that OnePlus teased on Friday with a virtual invite isn’t an event at all. That teaser was simply a symbol in reference to the company ditching the invite-only system that has accompanied their OnePlus One for the last year. That’s right, it has been a year since the OnePlus One went on sale in that really weird invite system that frustrated many of you for months. Frustrations be gone – the invite-system really has come to a close. Well, sort of.

In a blog post and press email, OnePlus talked about ditching the invite-only system permanently for the One as of today. Going forward, should you choose to, you can buy the OnePlus One without an invite. Unfortunately for OnePlus 2 future owners, the invite system will be back with fire. OnePlus mentioned that invites will be required to buy the “2” at launch, but they are “far more prepared” to make this transition.

Why the invite system with the OnePlus 2? Because OnePlus is a small company that wants to continue to limit its risk. By making phones on-demand like it can through invites, they aren’t keeping an inventory around, which is a big deal when you sell phones as cheaply as they have been doing with little margin.

So yeah – the OnePlus One invite system is gone, but it’s coming back when the OnePlus 2 launches in Q3.

Oh, to celebrate, OnePlus is pushing a 24-hour deal of 75% off on their Flip Covers and “Premium” screen protectors. You can buy those here.

Amazon is hosting another one of those deals on a big bundle of apps that will cost you nothing. Today’s haul totals $105 and includes a handful of good apps like Wolfram|Alpha, the original Plants vs. Zombies, Runtastic Pro, and Osmos HD. It may not be the most extensive list of must-haves, but I would imagine you could find something there that is worth installing.

In order to grab these apps, you will need the Amazon app installed. You can grab it from here.

Such anticipation.

I don’t know that I’ve ever had that tingling sensation in my toes before opening up a new phone, like I may have before jumping off a cliff, but I guess it’s possible. And not that I’ve jumped off a cliff before, but imagining it already has my little toesies feeling funny.

For just $26, your life can include a 10,000mAh battery pack that can charge even when on the go, thanks to a solar panel. This isn’t an April Fools’ joke either. ZeroLemon’s SolarJuice 10,000mAh battery pack is 47% off in the DL Deals store. With a 4.5 star rating on Amazon, and a regular price tag that hovers around $50, this is a pretty damn good deal.

The ZeroLemon SolarJuice allows you to simultaneously charge up to 3 devices at a time, is rain and shock proof, shouldn’t explode (seriously, that’s in the description), includes a grade-A battery cell, and even has a 2A port for faster charging of mobile devices. It should also last you for up to 1,000 cycles and has an included flashlight for those emergency moments where you need some glow.

The deal is live for a couple of days, so be sure to get in on it.

Minima Pro Live Wallpaper , a live wallpaper app that is without a doubt our favorite of the last year (it made our top apps of 2014 list), is on sale right now for just a $0.99. You should probably buy it. Trust me, if you like Material Design-inspired wallpapers, this is an app that won’t disappoint.

The app offers up 70 “hand-crafted” themes to get you started, options for building your own themes, more settings to customize than you can keep track of, motion as you scroll or tilt your phone, and a “Randomize” button that does all of the work for you. To see it in action, be sure to watch our video below.

For those of you who still think live wallpapers drain your battery, don’t worry, because you can use Minima to turn live wallpapers made in the app into regular wallpapers that won’t suck you dry. I do it almost daily. I run through the Randomizer, find a wallpaper setup I like, and then turn it into a non-live wallpaper.

Seriously, this is one of the few apps we can’t stop recommending.

After not even a full year in his new role, HTC’s VP of Industrial Design, Jonah Becker, is departing the company. For a bit of context, in late 2008, HTC acquired One & Co, which was led by Scott Croyle, Jonah Becker, and Daniel Hundt.

Scott Croyle left HTC in April of 2014, and at that time, Jonah Becker took over his role. Now with Croyle and Becker gone, HTC announced that Hundt, the last remaining piece of One & Co, will succeed the position.

Breaking the news on Twitter, Becker states that it has been an, “amazing seventeen year journey with One & Co and HTC, but it’s time for a new adventure.”

As reported by Engadget, the move may be due to an “ever increasing power struggle” between HTC’s design team and the company’s sales team. It is claimed that the company’s move from an UltraPixel rear-facing camera to a more standard 20MP camera is an example of this “power struggle.”

This news comes only one week after HTC’s Peter Chou stepped down as CEO, making way for Cher Wang, who now oversees all things HTC.

There is no doubt that the One M7 and One M8 pushed the design standard set on smartphones. They are gorgeous. Now, in the years to come, we shall see what HTC intends to do.

When we talk about the differences in Android vs. iOS, someone almost always brings up one of Android’s strengths over its counterpart as being “widgets.” Sure, iOS claims to have widgets, but they are really just panels of info in their notification shade, not actual, living, breathing, widgets on home screens like we have on Android. So with that in mind, we want to know what widgets you are currently using or always include on a home screen with each new launcher or phone. We are well aware that there are some great options out there from some of the best apps around that we more than likely aren’t taking advantage of.

For me personally, I keep things pretty minimal. I tend to fall back on a Zooper Widget skin that is constantly changing depending on my mood, the Google Search box, and a calendar widget from Sunrise. I feel like I’m missing out, though. Tim does too. You might feel like you aren’t fully taking advantage of your phone’s widget capabilities either.

So, we would love to know which widgets live on your home screens. And if you would like, feel free to include screenshots.

We know how tough it is to consider buying a phone right now with new flagships from HTC and Samsung arriving in days, but Motorola continues to toss out decent deals that should at least make you look. Through March 24, if you buy a Moto X (2nd gen) through Moto Maker, Motorola will toss in a Moto E (2nd gen) 3G for free ($119 value). While that deal would have been even sweeter if the free Moto E was the LTE model, a free phone is still a free phone.

It appears as if the deal is good whether you go for an unlocked version or an on-contract Moto X.

If the HTC One M9 doesn’t look like a re-hashing of last year’s One (M8), only with upgraded internals and a single camera on the back, then HTC has easily pulled off the greatest leak troll job in recent memory. Chances are, they haven’t done that and the One M9 really is just a re-hashing of last year’s One (M8). Call it disappointing or smart, it will all be official shortly.

HTC will take the stage at Mobile World Congress (MWC) at 7AM Pacific (10AM Eastern) to tell us what is and isn’t real, and also what may be a surprise.

You can watch the stream with us live, plus join in on a little live blog below.
