Updated: iPhone 6S Plus release date: where can I get it?

The highly anticipated iPhone 6S Plus has been released, and it's packed full of new and improved features, making it a substantial step up from last year's already impressive iPhone 6 Plus.

With Apple announcing that pre-orders for the iPhone 6S Plus will go live on Saturday September 12 in preparation for the release date of September 25, networks have already begun announcing what deals they'll be offering on Apple's new phablet, so where can you get one from, and how much will it set you back?

SIM-Free

As usual you'll be able to buy the iPhone 6S Plus from Apple's online store, and although you might not get such a tempting offer from the official store, it could be your best bet when getting your hands on the brand new device.

iPhone 6S

The iPhone 6S will launch at the same price as the iPhone 6 did last year, so for the 16GB variant you'll be splashing out £539, with the 64GB version costing £619 and the 128GB version weighing in at £699.

Apple also announced an upgrade program through the Apple Store that will let you upgrade to a new iPhone every year for $32 a month in the US - though no mention was made about the service coming to the UK.

EE

EE informed its customers on Twitter that it will be stocking the iPhone 6S Plus, and you'll be able to get it on contracts with Wi-Fi Calling and 4G+ thrown in as well.

Vodafone

Vodafone has confirmed that both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will be available on the network, and will come with access to its ultrafast 4G network - and for the first three months of your contract you'll have no limits on the amount of data you use.

O2

O2 will be stocking the iPhone 6S Plus, and you can register for updates on information on when the pre-orders kick off on the official O2 website.

If you're looking to swap your existing phone for an iPhone 6S Plus, then O2 is running its O2 Recycle scheme and will offer customers from any network prices for their handsets.

If you have an iPhone 6 Plus you can get £310 for the 16GB version, £350 for the 64GB and £370 for the 128GB version.

If you're swapping out the smaller iPhone 6, you'll get £280 for the 16GB version, £315 for the 64GB capacity and £330 for the 128GB version.

A 16GB iPhone 5S will net you £160, while the 64GB version will go for £185.

You can also swap out non-Apple phones as well, such as the Sony Xperia Z3+ (which will give you £175), while the HTC One (M8) will pay out £115.

Three

Three has also announced that it will be offering the new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus handsets, and you'll be getting 4G data at no extra cost.

No further pricing structures have been announced so far, but you'll be able to phone, text and use data in 18 countries (including the USA, France, Italy, Spain and Australia) without any roaming charges.

Virgin Media

Virgin Media will be offering the iPhone 6S Plus to its customers, and it will be available in the coming weeks, though no additional information was provided just yet.

Carphone Warehouse

We've had work that high street retailer Carphone Warehouse will be stocking the iPhone 6S Plus, along with the iPhone 6S as well.

Currys PC World

With the Currys and PC World stores being owned by the same company as Carphone Warehouse, it's little surprise that these shops will also be stocking the iPhone 6S Plus, though no prices have been announced so far.

Reaction: Techradar reacts: iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus

First impressions

Apple iPhone

After months (OK, a whole year) of waiting, Apple has finally announced its latest iPhones, the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. The handsets are evolutionary iterations over the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but bring a few notable new features to the table.

Still, are the latest iDevices everything we hoped they'd be or do these phones leave us feeling a little deflated?

We turned to techradar's editorial staff to get their knee-jerk reactions on the new iPhones following Apple's big event. Some are ready to upgrade as soon as the phones come out on September 25, others are less impressed. Read on!

Patrick Goss, Global Editor-in-Chief

iPhone Force Touch

On the iPhone 6S, Force Touch (3D Touch) effectively gives a whole other level of control and I think that's going to be huge going forwards. The camera improvements are cool - but as you'd expect with an "S" year it's probably not going to be enough to tempt in iPhone 6 users. If you love Apple, iOS and you are using an iPhone 5S then this is probably a no-brainer.

Got to admit the tempting phone for me in this generation is the 6S Plus - I'm actually regretting not getting the Plus a year ago and the new features plus my desire for a bigger screen make this the standout phone this year from Apple.

Matt Swider, Editor, Mobile

Camera

Apple saved the "S" for last, with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus announcements coming at the tail end of its keynote, but they're more than just the usual small specs upgrades for me.

I'm trading up to the new iPhone 6S because of the camera. I've reviewed the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and and tested the Galaxy S6, and both take better photos than my iPhone 6. Apple's iSight camera the 12MP sensor I need to make those "focus pixels" even sharper.

I want clearer photos in low-light conditions, and could care less about Live Photos. Apple's new 3D Touch screen intrigues me, but I want to test it out, along with that speedier A9 chip, before passing judgement. I also want to bend test out of that stronger aluminum to know if I can sit on my phone without it breaking again.

John McCann, Phones and Tablets Deputy Editor

iPhone Taptic Engine

The biggest talking point with the iPhone 6S is the Force Touch technology built into the screen. It's a genuinely exciting piece of technology, but it's going to be a few years before its full potential is realised. It has to start somewhere, but it's going to feel a little half baked on the 6S.

Other than that there's not much else which really stands out. The design is practically a carbon copy of the iPhone 6, and while it has more power under the hood and iOS 9 on its screen, that doesn't really set it apart from last year's handsets.

As for the iPhone 6S Plus, we waited for a big screened iPhone for years, and it looks like Apple is now fully behind the larger form factor with its second generation Plus phone.

Marc Chacksfield, Content Team Lead, Future Tech

A9 chip

Force Touch, sorry, 3D Touch looks really impressive on both the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus - it will take a while for the technology to really hit home but it has the potential to be a massive game changer for smartphones.

Obviously design-wise they are the same as before, but the rose gold color is really nice. It's what is under the hood that excites me, however. The A9 chip means games can play at 60fps, which is something I am still waiting for my PS4 to do.

I am not an iPhone user but these phones are definitely making me have second thoughts about sticking with Android. If only they improved the battery...

Joe Osborne, Senior Editor

iPhone 6S screen

Not to sound hyperbolic, but Apple just introduced smartphones to the "right click." This new 3D Touch feature isn't going to revolutionize how we use our phones like Jony Ive prophesies it will, but it's still pretty damn cool.

However, I wonder how Apple thinks it's going to get the masses to use this new tech. Sure, the power user that actually watches these events will know, but what about your parents? Apple better have some sort clever tutorial in mind, or this hopeful game changer of a feature could fall by the wayside.

James Peckham, Phones and Tablets Writer

iPhone 6S

On first glance, 3D Touch is the standout feature of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. How we interact with phone screens has barely changed since the first smartphone launched - bringing depth and pressure sensitivity is an interesting new step and if developers jump on board it'll be truly exciting.

Plus "Hey Siri" is a great new feature. One that has been on Android for quite some time, I admit, but it's still impressive to have Siri there on demand without having to even touch a thing. For once Apple has actually got me, a dedicated Android fan, excited about an iPhone.

Nick Pino, Associate Editor, Home Entertainment

Apple Android

Are people still surprised by Apple's iPhone event? Like, c'mon, you knew it would have a better camera, a higher resolution and a faster processor, why are you still surprised? Now, I'm not saying Apple needs to be the one to raise the bar on smartphones or that just because I'm not surprised doesn't mean I'm not going to get one. Apple doesn't need to innovate the iPhone if it doesn't want to. It has a half-dozen other projects to work on. What we saw today was a smart upgrade on an already good device, but it wasn't as revolutionary as Apple made it out to be. (That said, I'm still going to buy one.)

Cameron Faulkner, Assistant Editor

No upgrades

As someone who will be soon in the market for a new smartphone, I'm not too interested in Apple's latest iPhones, the 6S and 6S Plus. Maybe it's because nearly everything about the phones was leaked in advance, or maybe it's because not that much has changed.

I'm still excited to get my hands on the new devices to try out 3D Touch and the updated rear camera and Retina Flash features. But, as it stands today, not enough has changed for me to upgrade.

Kevin Lee, Associate Editor, Laptops

iPhone 6S

Although it's been less than a year since I upgraded to the iPhone 6, I'm fully onboard with Apple's new upgrade plan. The megapixel bump with the new 12MP camera is just too good to pass up and more so than resolution, I was thoroughly impressed with the sensor's ability to capture more dynamic range from bright highlights to the deep shadows.

3D Touch is the one feature I'm most skeptical about because the advancement of smartphones has always been about making things faster and snappier. Introducing a pseudo-right click to peek at apps and other things seems like it would slow down the tempo of current iPhone users.

Lily Prasuethsut, Associate Editor, Wearables

New iPhones

I'm in dire need of an upgrade and the iPhone 6S is just what I'm looking for. Its 4.7-inch screen will fit nicely in my pocket and in hand opposed to the gigantic iPhone 6 Plus (and now the iPhone 6S Plus). I've never been a fan of phablets but always wanted the power and features that came with them. Thankfully, the 6S is chock-full of new goodies like the A9 chip, 3D Touch and 12MP iSight camera. It'll be a great companion for my freshly updated Apple Watch. Now to pick a color...

Salwa Azar, Social Media Editor - techradar

Live Photo

Loving the 3D Touch gaming in the new iPhones, and the rose gold colour isn't as vomit-inducing as I'd worried it would be.

Also - the new camera will make even the shy photographers out there instant Instagram stars.

Ok. I WANT THAT CAMERA NOW. Will it rival the Fuji X100T for portable detail?

Michelle Fitzsimmons, Managing Editor

New iPhones

Hold the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S next to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, and I'd be hard pressed to tell you the difference between them (unless, of course, the "S" phones are in gold or rose gold). There are some meaningful upgrades, like 3D Touch, but the new iPhones feel like Apple is spinning its wheels until the next round of major innovation. I know that's expected with S upgrades, and who knows, maybe I'll lay my hands on them and decide then and there to upgrade from my 5S. But as of right now, my feeling is that Apple has done a decent job upgrading, not an extraordinary one.

iPhone 6S Plus is getting one camera feature that its smaller sibling isn't

Apple has just announced the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus, and they both include some important camera improvements, but you'll lose one feature if you go for the smaller variant.

Apple didn't mention it in the press conference, but optical image stabilization for video is a new feature that's only available iPhone 6S Plus.

It won't be on the iPhone 6S even though the smaller phone has undergone some impressive camera upgrades.

Missing out

We don't really understand why the feature has been missed out when everything else looks to be exactly the same on the camera front.

The spec list also shows if you want to take photos while recording 4K video on the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, they won't be at the 12MP sensor's full potential.

Both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will only be able to take 8MP photos whilst shooting in 4K, but that's still going to create some impressive shots.

Apple's new upgrade program lets you get a new iPhone every year

Apple is introducing a whole new way to get an iPhone.

The iPhone Upgrade Program will let users walk into an Apple Retail Store and walk out with a new iPhone once a year. According to Apple, customers can choose their carrier or buy an unlocked iPhone, and the program includes AppleCare+.

The program is only available at US Apple Stores, and pricing starts at $32/month.

iPhone upgrade program

Apple just announced the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, and the program looks to include the new iPhones. The program is a smart move by Apple as the company releases new iPhones every year, yet consumers tend to upgrade every two years or longer. Now, they can upgrade to keep pace with Apple's latest iPhone iterations.

Updated: iOS 9 will release September 16, get your iPhones and iPads ready

Apple announced the iOS 9 release date during its press conference today, and it'll be available for download on September 16, just a week ahead of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus launch.

You can download iOS 9 on Wednesday, September 16, one week from today. Or you can install the new operating system right now, as it's currently in beta.

That means, even if you're upgrading to the two new iPhones, you can play with Apple's new software mere days before the new devices launch in stores.

Thankfully, iOS 9 is free to download and the update works with all devices that currently run iOS 8. That means devices as new as the iPad 2 to the oldie iPhone 4S can install it too.

Breaking: Apple's iPhone 6S Plus is kind of a big deal, and it's all about the touch

Apple has just made the iPhone 6S Plus official, continuing its line of super-sized handsets.

The new phone comes sporting a 5.5-inch display and Apple's new 3DTouch capabilites, Apple's pressure-sensitive technology similar to that on the Watch.

There's a new color too, Rose Gold, or pink to you and me. It's also available in silver, space grey and gold.

Breaking: The iPhone 6S is official, and '3D Touch' is the new right click

Well we'll be damned - Apple has revealed the iPhone 6S, which brings a number of tweaks to the existing iPhone 6 design.

The new phone touches down alongside the 6S Plus, packing a 4.7-inch display, souped-up A9 processor and a new 12MP iSight camera that's capable of shooting 4K video. It will be available in silver, space gray and rose gold.

However, the most interesting new feature here is what Apple calls '3D Touch'. This is essentially a more elaborate version of Force Touch, which debuted on the Apple Watch. 3D Touch will let the phone sense different levels of pressure and respond accordingly.

You can use it on the home screen to get shortcuts to your most-used apps, for example, while the new "peek" gesture lets you use 3D touch to preview a link without opening Safari, and a more forceful "pop" push will let you fully display the content on screen. Yes, Apple might have just made the new right click for iPhone.

All of which required a more sophisticated form of haptic feedback, which allows the touchscreen to make shorter vibrational "taps", as Jony Ive described in his usual soothing tones.

iPhone

iPhone

Game on

3D Touch will be a particularly big deal for gaming (just as someone mentioned it would), allowing developers to offer new levels of interaction.

Helping all this along is the new A9 processor, which Apple says is 70% faster at CPU jobs than the iPhone 6's A8 processor, and 90% faster in graphics tasks. We've already mentioned the rear camera, but there'll also be a 5MP front-facing snapper for FaceTime HD.

Oh, and the 6S also includes a new Touch ID sensor that Apple claims is twice as fast as the last one, which we're pretty pleased about.

This is a sweet deal for a 64GB version of the iPhone 6 Plus. It's a shade cheaper than the best 64GB deal we could find on EE this month for this phone, though you do get 5GB here instead of 10GB - but we think that's enough for anyone. Total cost over 24 months: £1,176.

128GB: FREE phone | unlimited calls | unlimeted texts | 5GB of data | £49pm
This really is a fantastic deal on the 128GB version of the 6 Plus. You're essentially getting the same deal here as the one above... except you double the memory capacity. It's a no brainer! Total cost over 24 months: £1,176.

iphone 6 deals on Three

Best iPhone 6 Plus deals on Three

Three is one of few providers that offers unlimited data, and Feel at Home is amazing for regular travellers.

16GB: FREE phone | 600 mins | unlimited texts | 2GB data | £44pm
The lowest data tariff we'll suggest as a good deal is 1GB, and this Three deal doubles that. It's Three's cheapest to get the iPhone 6 Plus without paying anything upfront. It's a good deal though not as attractive as those from the other networks on this page. Total cost over 24 months: £1,056.

64GB: £49.99 phone | 600 minutes | unlimited texts | UNLIMITED data | £54pm
Weird lack of included minutes here, but no matter who makes phone calls these days anyway? Here you get Three's famous unlimited data package and an overall cost that's not significantly above any of the other tariffs on this page. Total cost over 24 months: £1,345.99.

128GB gold: £99.99 phone | 600 minutes | unlimited texts | 4GB of data | £56pm
This is the most attractive iPhone 6 Plus deal we can find on Three at the moment but it's hard to recommend. If you want this phone on this network, this is the deal. But you're far better off opting for a different network really. Total cost over 24 months: £1,443.99.
