Sony has just launched its latest smartphone range at a press conference at IFA 2015 in Berlin – and it's much the same as we'd expect from the Japanese manufacturer.

There's a new version of the main flagship phone in the form of the Xperia Z5 that boasts a 5.2-inch Full HD display offering 428 pixels-per-inch.

Then there's the Xperia Z5 Compact, a smaller version of the phone with a 4.6-inch 720p display but still packing a punch under the hood.

Much the same

The design of both phones is much the same as we've seen before with a brushed metal feel back, more rounded corners than before and it's available in white, black, gold and green.

The Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact both feature the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor – the same set up as the Xperia Z3+. The Xperia Z5 features 3GB of RAM whilst the Xperia Z5 Compact only has 2GB.

Storage wise there's 32GB on board with microSD support up to 200GB and each is running Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Both phones feature a 23MP camera with an Exmor RS image sensor that offers a much faster autofocus than we've seen on the Sony range before. It also includes 4K video capture and output as well as HDR and a 24mm wide-angle lens.

On the front of the phone is a 5MP sensor that can record Full HD video and features a 25mm wide angle lens.

There's also a new fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone and we presume ready for the launch of Android Pay.

As for battery life the Xperia Z5 will come with a disappointing sounding 2900mAh cell whilst the Xperia Z5 Compact will have a 2700mAh version.
