Samsung has been rumored to be interested in using Sony’s image sensors for the Galaxy S7 flagship that will launch early next year. However, a report today suggests that whether the Korean giant uses Sony or goes alone, it is interested in possibly reducing megapixels and not increasing them.
A poster on social network Weibo claims that Samsung is seriously considering using a 12 megapixel lens, which would be smaller than the 16MP snapper on the current Galaxy S6 and much smaller than virtually all of Samsung’s flagship rivals. The leak comes from someone who has a stellar track record with information, especially for components.
Apple uses a 12 megapixel lens in its iPhone 6s and until two months ago Cupertino’s flagship was an 8MP packing handset. The moral of that story is that less megapixels is not always a bad thing as the iPhone is consistently considered among the best smartphones for photography. If Samsung goes a similar route then the company will use a bigger sensor and large megapixels to allow more light.
